The P-Series CNC machine is one of the most innovative machine centers in the world. This machine was invented by the engineer and visionary Dr. Michael Schwaar 20 years ago. The CNC control and kinematics of this machine was at least 10 years ahead of the technical state of the art at that time. Because this machine showed already at that time, how a kind of robot in mechanical engineering can produce high quality components.

Thanks to the patented parallel kinematics and the optimized machine components, machining with high dynamics (1g) is possible. But this machining center can machine materials that are difficult to machine but also very porous. Thus, this CNC machine is an all-rounder and you benefit from high flexibility in your metalworks fabrication.

The Pentapod is suitable for the production and processing of workpieces from the automotive, foundry, shipbuilding, tank construction, on shore and off shore, mine construction and any steel construction. Thanks to the minimalist modularity of the machine, it proves to be very low maintenance and robust.The design shows an optimal size of the machine with maximum use of installation space at the same time. The CNC control is user-friendly and proves to be highly efficient in 5 to 7 axis machining.

Additive manufacturing

Generating large industrially relevant components using additive manufacturing is no longer a hurdle thanks to the integration of 3D printing tools in our 5-axis CNC machining centers. The WAAM and SEAM processes are two innovative methods for the rapid production of metal and plastic components.
In our CNC machines, the printed components can be subtracted (milling or drilling) between or reworked in the same workpiece clamping. In addition, thanks to our 5-axis kinematics, additive manufacturing of additional components on existing parts is possible.

Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing

The so-called WAAM process is ideally suited for the additive manufacturing of large metallic components. The advantages are in particular the high build-up rate compared to powder-based processes and the material savings compared to subtractive manufacturing. However, with our CNC machining centers, both processes can be automated in one machine. It is of great advantage to produce the component during the additive and the intermediate or downstream subtractive manufacturing in one clamping.

Screw Extrusion Additive Manufacturing

To print large plastic parts we have integrated the 3D tool SEAM in our CNC machines. Compared to filament-based printers, this process delivers large components quickly and cost-effectively, which are suitable for industrial use thanks to the integration of reinforcing fibers. This tool can be used in the stationary P-Series as well as in our mobile machine. The advantage is the hybrid process – additive manufacturing of plastic components with intermediate or downstream CNC milling process in mobile use.

Robust

5-axis machine

The special feature of the machine is already evident from the machine structure. On the one hand, the five struts can be seen, which act to hold and move the machine spindle and the tool. The second structural feature is the icosahedron machine structure. 

As a physical body, the icosahedron has the highest inherent rigidity. This advantage is exploited here, so that high rigidity of the machine is provided without a machine foundation, thus enabling high machining accuracy. The combination of the icosahedron and the 5 struts kinematics (Pentapod) is an optimal solution for a robust and durable machine tool. Likewise, this advantage plays out especially in the PM Series, which is particularly suitable for mobile machining. 

Tempered

This is another feature of Metrom’s unique cnc machines. But this feature makes our machine stable and usable for application sites where the environmental conditions are not optimal. So the icosahedron frame has another special feature: a tempering system. 

The icosahedron structure of the machine hood with the 5 ball screws is a construction of tubes.  Water is constantly pumped and circulate through the tubes and five struts, which keeps the enclosure at a constant temperature to counteract external temperature fluctuations and finally allows high machining accuracy.

Our Pentapod machine tools are characterized by their simple but robust construction. So that the purely mechanical components of the machine is focused on the essential. Of course, the characteristic icosahedron design is evident in all METROM CNC machines. The most important standard components of our machines are the five ball screws, the tool changer and the machine table.

The ball screws are one of the most process relevant parts of the machine and have been optimized over the last 20 years. Now we are able to provide our customers with the maximum stiffness and performance. Basically, the task of the 5 ball screws is to perform a 5-axis machining of the spindle. Through their axial movements, the spindle is guided accordingly. They must therefore be robust in order to support the weight of the spindle and to absorb the process forces, especially during milling.

An essential component of a CNC machining center is the automatic tool changer. It ensures fast and automated production. The spindle can access the magazine and pick up the various tools from the magazine.
At Metrom, two types of tool changers are used. The pick-up changer is suitable for users who require few tools for their machining process. In order to have a higher flexibility, the changer is worthwhile as a turret with several places.But we have adapted our tool changer for hybrid production. We are able to integrate stations in our machines to deposit a welding head or extruder for 3D printing.

The machine table of a conventional machine tool determines the process. Today’s modern machine tools use rotary tilting tables to enable 5-axis machining. On the other hand, this table must have a high stiffness in order to be able to machine heavy components with high accuracy.
With our CNC machines we move the lighter spindle 5 axes to the workpiece. This reduces the load on the table during the process. However, it is advantageous to use a rotary table to enable 6-axis machining and thus complete machining of complex or rotary components. We use modern machine tools for an optimal CNC process.
