    Additive Manufacturing with CNC 5 Axis Mill

    Hybrid Manufacturing – Milling and 3D Printing in one Pentapod 5 Axis Machining Center

    Generating large industrially relevant components using additive manufacturing is no longer a hurdle, thanks to integrating 3D printing tools in our 5-axis machining centers. The DED (WAAM and LMD) and SEAM processes are innovative methods for rapidly producing metal and plastic components.

    In our CNC machines, the printed components can be intermediately or post-processed (milling, drilling and other processes) in the same workpiece clamping. In addition, thanks to our 5-axis kinematics, additive manufacturing of additional components on existing parts is possible.

    Screw Extrusion Additive Manufacturing (SEAM)

    We have integrated the 3D tool SEAM to print large plastic parts in our CNC machines. Compared to filament-based printers, this process delivers large components quickly and cost-effectively, which are suitable for industrial use thanks to the integration of reinforcing fibers. This tool can be used in the stationary P-Series and our mobile machine. The advantage is the hybrid process – additive manufacturing of plastic components with intermediate or downstream CNC milling process for portable use.

    Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM)

    The so-called WAAM process is ideally suited for the additive manufacturing large metallic components. The advantages are, in particular, the high build-up rate compared to powder-based processes and the material savings compared to subtractive manufacturing. However, with our CNC machining centers, both processes can be automated in one machine. Producing the component during the additive and the intermediate or downstream subtractive manufacturing in one clamping is advantageous.

    LMD

    Laser Metal Deposition (LMD)

    The LMD (Laser Metal Deposition) process stands out by utilizing cutting-edge OSCAR PLT laser technology, making it a prime choice for additive manufacturing metallic components.     What are Pentapod CNC 5 axis machines?

    The Pentapod is nothing other than a CNC machine with the particularity that the machine spindle is held by 5 ball screws and moved through the machining area with 5 axes. This setup is called 5 struts parallel kinematics and was invented 20 years ago by Dr. Michael Schwaar.

    The spindle can be tilted horizontally up to 90° in one direction and, with the aid of a rotary table (6th axis), allows complete 5-side machining of the component.

    What are the differences of Pentapod and traditional vertical and horizontal 5 axis cnc machine?

    Design: One of the most striking features of the Pentapod is its unique design. Firstly, it consists of 5 ball screws that extend out from the machine and form the parallel kinematics responsible for the 5-axis movement of the machine spindle. Secondly, the machine’s external upper shape is an icosahedron, making it stand out even more.

    Kinematics: As previously mentioned, the Pentapod’s patented parallel kinematics with five struts is the heart of the machine and a key feature that sets it apart from others. This unique design enables users to significantly increase productivity and energy efficiency, leading to an outstanding ROI.

    What are the advantages of a Pentapod 5 axis machining center?

    Rigidity: The design of the Pentapod 5-axis machining center is based on an icosahedron body. This offers exceptionally high inherent rigidity so that no machine foundation is necessary, and exact machining can be performed. Also, the five struts are gimbaled in the machine body and are therefore not subject to bending stresses, thus very stiff.
